Rector – Commander of Military University of Technology presented J. Szmelter medals
6–9.05.2014

The 13th Science and Technology Conference Computer Techniques in Engineering took place in Licheń Stary from 6th to 9th May 2014. This conference is continuation of a series of science and technology conferences “FEM Programmes in Computer Aid for Analysis of Design and Production” and a science and technology conference “Impact Resistance of Structure”. The main organiser of the present conference was the Department of Mechanics and Applied Computer Science, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Military University of Technology in Warsaw. The conference was attended by almost 120 participants from Polish universities and scientific centres.

The present edition of the conference was organised under the auspices of Rector – Commander of Military University of Technology, Gen., Brig., Prof., D.Sc., Eng., Zygmunt Mierczyk and the President of Polish Academy of Sciences, Prof., D.Sc., Eng., Michał Kleiber (a multiannual chairman of the Conference Scientific Committee). Additionally the conference patronage was constituted by numerous section of Polish Academy of Sciences and scientific associations.

Within this year edition of the Conference, during the Opening Session, for the first time there took place the ceremony of presentation of Jan Szmelter – an outstanding scientist, pioneer of finite element method in Poland – medals. The medal was constituted with the resolution of the Senate of Jarosław Dąbrowski Military University of Technology No 15/WAT/2014 of 27 February 2014.

The medals were presented in three categories. There were honoured:

For overall activity:

  • Prof., D.Sc., Eng., Michał Kleiber (President of Polish Academy of Sciences)
  • Prof. D.Sc., Eng., Marian Dacko (retired MUT Professor and the closest collaborator to Prof. Szmelter)

For direct achievement:

  • Prof., D.Sc., Eng., Tadeusz Burczyński (the director of the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research, Polish Academy of Sciences)
  • Prof., D.Sc., Eng., Tadeusz Niezgoda (the head of the Department of Mechanics and Applied Computer Science, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Military University of Technology)

For the young scientist’s achievements:

  • Ph.D., Eng., Agnieszka Sabik (Gdańsk University of Technology)
  • Ph.D., Eng., Danuta Miedzińska (Military University of Technology)

Memorandum of the Medal Chapter (composed of outstanding scientists as, for example, Professors: Tomasz Łodygowski – rector of Poznań University of Technology, Eugeniusz Rusiński – vice-rector of Wrocław University of Technology, Eugeniusz Świtoński – Silesian University of Technology) on granting this order was read out by Prof. Zdzisław Bogdanowicz – Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Military University of Technology and vice-president of the Chapter. The medal were presented by Gen., Brig., Prof., D.Sc., Eng., Zygmunt Mierczyk – Rector of Military University of Technology- who was present at the opening session. After presenting the medals there were delivered short speeches by laureates and memories about Prof. Szmelter.

The conference venue was selected in the course of a bid process, thus the offer of Atut hotel in Licheń Stary was the most cost effective, and, what is important, the offered conditions satisfied conference participants’ all expectations.

On Wednesday evening, just before the dinner party culminating the first day of the conference, there took place a magic show performed by Jędrzej Bukowski, the only illusionist in Poland with a Ph.D. degree – until only recently he was a lecturer at Wrocław University of Technology.

On Thursday, the conference participants visited the basilica in Licheń, which is presently the biggest, in terms of cubature, building structure of this type in Poland. It should be noticed that both the basilica and the museum located in it have a religious and patriotic character.

The organisers would like to sincerely thank the large group of new Participants and all regular Participants. Thanks to them, the conference became a permanent fixture in the calendar of scientific meetings on computer techniques in engineering. Participation and interesting works presented by the participants will contribute both to the development of computer and experimental techniques in engineering and to the transfer of scientific and technical knowledge between the scientific centres as well as between scientific centres and enterprises.
